​"Picture this: I was cruising along in my career at Dexterra Group, comfortably settled into my role as a building operator. Life was good, like a leisurely Sunday drive. Then, out of nowhere, I was introduced to Smartsheet—a tool I initially dismissed as just another Excel knockoff. Oh, how wrong I was!

At first, I approached Smartsheet cautiously, like a driver unsure of a new track. I filled in cells, jotted down a few metrics, and thought, "Well, this isn’t too different from Excel." But something nagged at me. I knew there had to be more to this tool, so I did a little digging. And boy, did I find a treasure trove!

 

I discovered a small, dedicated community of Smartsheet users who were creating graphs, dashboards, and forms that would make any data enthusiast’s heart race. This was the moment I realized Smartsheet wasn’t just a spreadsheet with fancy decals; it was a fully-loaded race car ready to take me to new heights.

 

Suddenly, my mind was racing with ideas. I couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning with visions of process improvements and efficiency gains. It was clear: I couldn’t be just a building operator anymore. I had to harness this tool’s power and transform my career.

My first creation was an Information Portal—a sleek, user-friendly alternative to the clunky, outdated SharePoint system. This portal housed crucial information like vendor lists, asset details, security clearances, and SOPs, all easily accessible to my team. It was a hit, and when an Operations Coordinator position opened up, I was the obvious choice. This new role gave me more time to weave Smartsheet magic.

 

As an Operations Coordinator, I saw gaps in our processes as wide as the Monaco track. Preventative maintenance scheduling was a mess, thanks to our two-dimensional CMMS program. So, I built a Boiler Start-up and Shutdown Program with Smartsheet. It allowed us to schedule assets, communicate delays, and provide live updates—ensuring we met all deadlines and avoided penalties. It was our first penalty-free season, a true victory lap for the team!

Impressed by my success, my Operations Manager offered me the keys to the entire HVAC-R Division. In just two years, I went from building operator to head of a whole department. Smartsheet became my secret weapon, with features like Document Building, Dynamic View, Work Apps, Data Shuttle, and Data Mesh.

I became an early adopter in 2022 and never looked back. With Smartsheet, I created programs that saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars in consultation fees, penalties, and contract terminations. Even when my original account closed, my reputation as a solutions provider kept me on board. I tackled new challenges, turned around failing accounts, and provided cost-saving solutions for new ones.

Recently, I developed a Quality Assurance program using Data Shuttle, cutting our admin team’s data entry time by 99%. What used to take a day for one site now took less than an hour for 49 sites across Ontario. We even launched our first all-Smartsheet account to raving success.

Though my organization presents frequent challenges, I feel I’ve reached the peak of my current capabilities. I’m eager to collaborate with a Smartsheet service provider like Productive, combining my love of motorsport and Smartsheet into one unique adventure. Meeting key players in the Smartsheet community who are pushing boundaries and making magic happen would be like getting a behind-the-scenes tour of the F1 paddock.
